Happy National Flip Flop Day! The official start to summer is just a couple days away, so it only makes sense that we’d celebrate the unofficial shoe of summer today. Flip flops are the comfiest, cutest shoes to wear in the summertime, especially as a kid. When I was little, I took for granted how easy flip flops were to slip on. As a big girl now, I struggle with strappy sandals, tall heels, and generally inconvenient footwear. It’s too bad flip flops aren’t more business casual-appropriate.
Since I can’t actually wear flip flops today, I thought, why not eat them?
Okay, back up; that came out wrong.
No need to start gnawing on your shoes, because I’ve got an easy recipe for the sweetest flip flops you’ve ever seen: Red, White, and Blue Flip Flop Nutter Butters.
Tell me these aren’t the cutest cookies you’ve ever seen. With their red, white, and blue color palate, they’re a perfect 4th of July recipe, and they’ll be a hit at your cookout. The prep is simpler than you think, plus there’s no baking required. So you don’t need to be a pastry chef, or even have an artistic bone in your body to make this adorable treat.
You can get as creative as you want with the décor. No matter what, you wind up with a summery cookie that will make people squee with delight over its level of cuteness. It only takes a few ingredients, and there’s no hot oven required. Now that’s how you make a summer dessert!
Put on your favorite pair of flip flops, and let’s decorate some cookies.
A Few Tips Before You Get Cooking:
- Get creative with your decorations. Try fun sprinkles, or add stars and stripes and sparkles.
- If you’re pressed for time, you can set the cookies in the freezer instead. However, you might wind up with a layer of condensation on them when you take them out.
- You can decorate these to just be bright, summery colors for any time of the summer.
- I recommend using Wilton Ready-to-Use Frosting because you can attach piping tips right to them.

Red, White, and Blue Flip Flop Nutter Butters
By The Smart Cookie Cook
Ingredients:
- 12-oz. bag blue Candy Melts
- 24 Nutter Butter Cookies
- Red frosting
- White frosting
- optional: red, white, and blue sprinkles
Directions:
- Line a tray with parchment or waxed paper.
- Melt Candy Melts according to package directions in a medium bowl.
- Dunk Nutter Butters into the melted candy, coating entirely on all sides. Place on prepared pan.
- Place in fridge to set, about 30 minutes.
- Use red frosting to draw a curved line coming from the top center of the cookie to the left center of the cookie (think from North to West). Repeat again, drawing to the right center (think from North to East). These will be your straps. If you want to get fancy, you can use a ridged piping tip.
- Use the white to draw a white star centered at the point of the straps for decoration.
- Store in fridge in an air-tight container.
